On July 18, the Athletes Unlimited Softball League and the Chicago Bandits will honor softball pioneer Betty Chapman during the Bandits vs. Talons game at the Parkway Bank Sports Complex in Rosemont, Illinois.In 1951, Betty Chapman broke the color barrier in the National Girls Softball League / National Girls Baseball League, becoming the first African American woman to play in a professional women’s softball league. Her groundbreaking career helped open doors for future generations of women athletes and remains an important part of softball history today.
It’s incredible to see today’s professional softball organizations recognizing one of the true pioneers of the game. Nights like this help preserve the history of the women who built the foundation for the sport long before modern professional softball existed.
