Better Cycling

• Chilean artists Tere Chad and Otto Schade will launch Better Cycling’s programme at OMA Bikes this summer.

This summer, Chilean artists Tere Chad and Otto Schade (OSCH) will launch Better Cycling (6 Sep), a community arts project that uses public art and creative learning to promote safer, more independent cycling among young people in Hammersmith & Fulham. Taking place at OMA Bikes (325 Fulham Palace Rd, London SW6 6TJ) the project combines mural painting, community workshops (5 - 6 Aug) and cycling education to encourage active travel, improve wellbeing and reduce carbon emissions. Developed in partnership with OMA Bikes, Better Cycling invites local secondary school students and families to explore the benefits of cycling while contributing ideas that will inspire a new permanent mural for the shop’s façade.

Cycling plays an increasingly important role in creating healthier, greener and more connected communities. Better Cycling aims to empower young people with practical knowledge and confidence to travel safely by bicycle, while encouraging positive lifestyle habits that can continue into adulthood. Through freehand and stencil spray-painting workshops alongside safer cycling guidance, participants will develop creative skills, build confidence and engage with their local environment. The project also highlights the environmental benefits of active travel, including reduced traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, cleaner air and quieter streets. By bringing together families, artists, cyclists and local residents, Better Cycling seeks to strengthen community connections and create a lasting public artwork celebrating Hammersmith & Fulham.

Tere Chad is a Chilean multidisciplinary artist, curator and Trustee of the Royal Society of Sculptors whose practice focuses on sustainability, participatory art and collective wellbeing. Her work has been exhibited internationally, with public artworks installed across the UK, Italy and Mexico. Otto Schade (OSCH) is an internationally recognised Chilean street artist known for his large-scale murals, distinctive ribbon compositions and surreal imagery. Originally trained as an architect, Schade has transformed public spaces around the world through vibrant artworks that encourage reflection and dialogue. The two artists have collaborated through the Chilean Visual Arts Group, supported by the Chilean Embassy in London, since 2022.

OMA Bikes is a community-focused bicycle shop and social enterprise based in Fulham, dedicated to making cycling accessible and inclusive. Better Cycling has been made possible through the generosity of supporters on the Spacehive crowdfunding platform and through funding from the Hammersmith & Fulham Hive programme and The Anglo Chilean Society. Their support demonstrates a shared commitment to improving youth wellbeing, promoting sustainable transport and investing in creative community initiatives.
