The Best Adapted Book Club is led by Roxanne Baker. We read the books behind the movies, before they hit the big screen this Oscar season!
About this Event

The Best Adapted Book Club focuses on books on their way to becoming award-season films. February's pick is Midwinter Break, Bernard MacLaverty's novel that was shortlisted for the 2019 International Dublin Literary Award.
A moving portrait of retired couple Gerry and Stella Gilmore's marriage in crisis, Bernard MacLaverty reminds us why he is regarded as one of the greatest living Irish writers. Through accurate, compassionate observation and effortlessly elegant writing, he reveals the long-unspoken insecurities that exist between Gerry and Stella over their four-day holiday in Amsterdam, crafting a profound examination of human love. The film is set to be released on February 20, 2026.

We will meet in person in the loft at our store at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $15.95, which is the cost of your copy of Midwinter Break to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Bernard MacLaverty is the author of five previous collections of stories and five novels, including Grace Notes, which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and Midwinter Break, shortlisted for the International Dublin Literary Award. Born in Ireland, he now lives in Glasgow, Scotland.
