Beowulf! -- Discussion Seminar at The New School!

In March, we discussed the famous first part of Beowulf, and found insights into why it might be such an enduring classic. The poem gave insights into the problems of society -- that is, those that, like the monster Grendel -- "make war on joy, killing it and eating it." There are problems that divide men from one another, and they are not easily solved -- but a hero might be able to.

Seminars at The New School are modeled on the philosophical seminar conversations at St. John's College in Annapolis. The idea is to see the writing fresh, as though we were reading it for the first time, and in so doing come to a deeper understanding. When we approach great works this way, it often leads to a much greater admiration for the work as well.
How It Works: The New School has been conducting seminars for over 20 years! Around a large table, around 8 to 15 participants gather and hear the Opening Question -- a question designed to begin the conversation with a fresh start. Ideas are presented, tasted, questioned, shared -- all with a mind to really seeing, knowing, and gaining wisdom and insight.
Conversations last for two hours. The ideas prompted by the conversations linger.
Adults and older children are welcome. The selection from Beowulf will be sent to ticketholders when they reserve a seat.
These are "guest tickets," available for up to four participants each Seminar. The remainder of the seats are reserved for parents, staff, and students at The New School.
