Good day everyone, I am Roland Pouliot and I am hosting a fundraising event in Welland at The Club Richelieu with the help of Angele Garant and Amanda Cote. It will be a spectacular Valentines dinner with wine in order to raise money for my brother Ron Pouliot and family. Guests are welcomed from 5pm to 2am and the event opens to everyone after 8pm to 2am. There will be plenty of opportunity to buy tickets and win prizes.
Please send donations or your ticket purchases to; [email protected] and don’t hesitate to contact myself, Angele or Amanda. Thank you for your generosity.
Sincerely,
Roland Pouliot
But please continue to read Ron’s unforgettable story and let his words motivate you to help in anyway you can;
Hi everybody, most of you know me as Ron, Roland's brother. I have a wife, 2 daughters and an adopted niece to support and care for. My youngest daughter has a form of Autism that keeps my wife at home to care for her. I have been this family's sole support for the past 29 years. Last spring I went to my doctor to see about getting my hip replaced and to have a lump in my throat checked. My doctor didn't seem too worried about either but soon after the first X-ray was sent to my hip surgeon things started to seem out of the ordinary. He then sent me for multiple tests, X-rays, CT scan and an Ultrasound. He then referred me to another doctor. I had a feeling it was bad news. My wife and I met with him and he explained the problem with my hip replacement surgery. I had bone cancer in my pelvis and it would have to be removed. He mentioned all the possibilities from this kind of surgery but seemed hopeful. I then had to see another specialist for the lump in my throat. More tests and scans were performed and he also referred me to another doctor in the Juravinsky Cancer centre. I was beginning to fear of the reality of a cancer diagnosis. After the consult, my doctor explained I had 2 more cancers, one at the back of my tongue the other in my neck's lymph node. This would be treated with Radiation. It was crushing news for my wife and me which it took me a while to accept it. My surgery came quickly for my hip and it was an extensive 10 hour procedure where they removed 75% of my left pelvis bone. I then spent over 2 months in the hospital. I had another emergency surgery which left me on I.V. antibiotics for months, blood clots issues and where I even coded almost dying but thankfully I was in hospital care, while the amazing staff relentlessly worked on me for over 6 hours to finally get me stabilized. I truly thought I was a gonner. My recovery from hip surgery has been going very slow and the improvement I was expecting to have has been very disappointing. The cancer in my neck had me endure 29 radiation treatments which I underestimated its debilitating effects with radiation burns to the right side of my neck and sores in my throat. I now only can eat soup because anything else is very painful to swallow but I can't taste it either.
Everything now tastes terrible and it will be a while before I can actually taste good food again. I have now lost over 30 lbs and it continues to drop. My days go by slowly because I cannot do very much due to lack of energy, lack of hunger and waves of feeling sick during the day. My sleep has been terrible and shows no signs of improving. I've had many days where I feel I cannot go on but I've made it this far. My life has changed and will never be the same. I feel I may never walk again without a walker or cane, the cancer hasn’t reduced in size so I question the treatments I suffered through. I now must face my future if I cannot walk without a cane GM will consider me as unable to perform my duties which means they can simply release me. I was also told I would have to sign up for disability. This change in my income will devastate my family's way of life. With everything costing so much now, how can a family of five live a good life on a disability income. My future is now uncertain but I continue to try and find the light at the end of my dark tunnel. I hope you can find it in your heart to support me in helping support my family.
Thank You,
Ron Pouliot.
