Please continue to read her story from her sweet daughter in law Amanda Kellar below.
Karen has chosen to keep her diagnosis private for the past few years, and while we have honored that choice, we have now reached a point where sharing her story is necessary.
In December 2023, Karen was diagnosed with Stage 4 renal cell carcinoma. Despite undergoing three different chemotherapy regimens with immunotherapy, along with two rounds of radiation, her cancer continues to progress. Her pain levels and the side effects from her current treatment have increased significantly in recent weeks.
Following her most recent PET scan, Karen was referred to MD Anderson Cancer Center in September. We are hopeful that there may be a clinical trial available that could provide a new and effective treatment option. Her appointment is scheduled for December 8th.
In late October, Karen was unexpectedly let go from her lifelong career in title work. This loss of income, compounded by the loss of insurance coverage, has created a substantial financial hardship. While she has the option to continue coverage through COBRA, the cost is extremely high. We have been paying nearly $1,000 per month for her coverage alone for the last two months. At this time, Bruce is without insurance entirely. Although continuing COBRA is financially challenging, it is the only way to move forward with MD Anderson and keep treatment options open.
To help relieve this burden and allow Karen to focus on her health, we have established a GoFundMe. We respectfully ask our family, friends, and community to share this post, keep Karen in your thoughts and prayers, and, if possible, consider contributing.
We remain committed to supporting her, and we are determined not to give up. π
