About this Event
The ASCN: Calgary Hub is thrilled to invite practitioners and enthusiasts to this workshop, which creates a space to connect and learn about Art for Social Change in Action.
Join The Fourth Space facilitators Aly and Maya for an evening of imagination, poetry, and collective storytelling. We will spend our time together reflecting and re-imagining what lies beneath the skies we share. Using poetry, story, and collective reflection, participants will explore how art can give voice to hope. In an inherently collaborative process, participants will explore the sensory landscapes of the spaces we share and co-create poetic stories to envision new and alternative futures.
About The Fourth Space
The Fourth Space is a Calgary-based nonprofit that uses arts, play, and storytelling to strengthen the holistic development of youth and adults, with a particular focus on immigrant, racialized, and underserved communities. We create spaces where people explore identity, build resilience, and share their stories through creative practice.
Our work is grounded in the idea that most youth move between three main spaces - home, school/work, and community institutions such as sports teams or mosques. We offer a Fourth Space: a dedicated environment for creative connection, cultural affirmation, and community-building. We embrace play in the arts as a vital tool for expression, healing, and belonging, and we centre process-based and play-based learning that values creativity, failure, and judgement-free spaces. Through workshops, performances, and play-based programs, we expand access to the arts, foster mental health literacy and well-being, and invite individuals into joyful, affirming experiences that strengthen both personal well-being and community resilience.
The facilitators for this workshop are The Fourth Space Co-Founders Aly Jafferani and Sara-Maya Kaba. Aly is a seasoned storyteller and educator who has designed and delivered youth programs and adult education experiences across Canada, South Asia, East Africa, and Central Asia. Sara-Maya is a poet, dancer, and artist-educator passionate about using the arts to improve quality of life. She is currently one of Mount Royal University’s Artist Changemakers in Residence (2024-25).
Light snacks and complimentary soft drinks will be served.
Registration is required as capacity is limited. This event will be held at Trico Changemakers Studio at Mount Royal University. Trico is located on the third floor of Mount Royal University’s Bissett School of Business in EB 3013.
