Belton High School Theatre Department Announces Production of Little Women
Adapted by Kate Hamill
Belton, MO — The Belton High School Theatre Department is proud to announce its upcoming production of Little Women, adapted by acclaimed playwright Kate Hamill. Performances will take place at the Belton High School Performing Arts Center on January 29, 30, and 31 at 7:00 PM, with a matinee on February 1 at 2:00 PM.
Kate Hamill’s bold and imaginative adaptation breathes new life into Louisa May Alcott’s beloved novel, infusing it with humor, urgency, and emotional honesty. While honoring the heart of the original story, this version centers on Jo March’s fierce struggle for independence and self-definition, exploring questions of identity, ambition, and belonging within a society shaped by rigid expectations and the realities of the Civil War era.
The play highlights the distinct dreams of the March sisters—Meg’s longing for stability, Jo’s passion for writing, Amy’s pursuit of art, and Beth’s devotion to music—revealing the “civil wars” within the family as each sister navigates love, loss, and the pressure to conform. With its contemporary language and dynamic storytelling, Hamill’s adaptation speaks powerfully to modern audiences while remaining rooted in the classic themes that have made Little Women endure for generations.
