Belonging by Design: Creating Spaces Where Everyone Can Participate

Presented by Angel City Football Club and

Workshop Description:

Belonging is shaped long before an event starts, a meeting begins, or a conversation takes place. The environments we create, the way we interact, and the systems we build all influence whether people feel welcome, supported, and able to participate.

In this interactive workshop, participants will explore how disability, neurodiversity, and inclusive design can help us create experiences where more people can thrive. Through reflection, lived experience, practical examples, and collaborative discussion, you’ll discover how small, intentional choices can have a meaningful impact on participation and belonging. Rather than focusing only on accommodations, we’ll explore how designing with curiosity and flexibility benefits everyone.

During this workshop, participants will:

  • Experience how inclusive design influences belonging from the moment they arrive
  • Explore the relationship between disability, neurodiversity, belonging, and inclusive design
  • Learn a practical framework that examines Environment, Interaction, and Systems to identify opportunities for creating more inclusive experiences
  • Hear lived experiences that highlight how different people experience the same space in different ways
  • Reflect on their own workplace, organization, or community and identify opportunities to create more welcoming and inclusive experiences
  • Participants can engage in ways that are comfortable (e.g., listening, writing, reflecting, small or large groups discussions, or choosing to pass)
  • Leave with practical tools and one meaningful action they can immediately apply

Who should attend?

This workshop is designed for community leaders, nonprofit professionals, educators, event organizers, managers, accessibility professionals and advocates, and anyone interested in creating spaces where more people feel welcomed, connected, and able to participate.

No prior knowledge of disability or neurodiversity is required.
