After many student requests, I'm excited to offer this Beginner Veil Poi Technique Workshop – especially for those who haven’t learned poi with us before!
Veil poi is a vibrant, hypnotic, and highly visual fusion prop that’s perfect for outdoor performances and summer events. Although not traditionally part of belly dance. This beginner Veil Poi workshop demonstrates how we can use the ancient art of poi spinning as as a modern prop in which stunning complex patterns are weaved in the air using colourful trails of chiffon.
In this session, you’ll learn the fundamentals of veil poi using double-handed poi with flowing chiffon veil tails. We'll focus on beginner-friendly technique, understanding the planes, developing co-ordination and learn the foundation patterns that can go on to create stunning effects in the air.
What is Poi?
“Poi” is the Māori word for “ball on a cord.” Originating from the Māori people of New Zealand, poi was used to develop strength, flexibility, and coordination. This stunning colourful and hypnotic prop can be used as a beautiful performance art that used as a beautiful performance art can now be seen at festivals, events and nightclubs all over the world. It pairs perfectly with the grace of belly dance and is a stunning addition to your dance skills.
This workshop will cover:
- Basic veil poi handling and flow
- Core movement patterns and understanding the planes
- Developing Co-Ordination and Direction changes
- Plenty of practice time to build flow and confidence
- Each movement will be broken down into easy-to understand explanations.
Poi takes a great deal of commitment and repetition to become comfortable with the techniques. This workshop will guide you through beginner movements and help you with truly understanding the movements before putting them into practice. You will have time to practise your new skills with this beautiful visual prop.
