Alongside all this it has a rich military maritime and cultural heritage. Ypres is a charming town, which offers a rich history and culture. It is best known for its role in World War I, when it was the site of several fierce battles and witnessed the first use of poison gas. Today, visitors can pay tribute to the fallen soldiers at the Menin Gate and other memorials around the town.
