Maurice Ravel had long considered composing a piano concerto when, in 1929, he received a commission from Paul Wittgenstein to write a concerto for the left hand. This Austrian pianist had lost his right arm during World War I, but continued his pianistic career by arranging works himself and commissioning compositions. Ravel accepted the assignment, resulting in the Piano Concerto for the Left Hand in D major, a single-movement composition that is rather dark and tragic in nature. In parallel, Ravel also wrote the Piano Concerto in G major. This brilliant work—initially intended to be called a ‘Divertissement’ by Ravel—is much lighter in character and draws inspiration from jazz music and Basque folk melodies.
FR ― Maurice Ravel nourrissait depuis longtemps l'idée de composer un concerto pour piano lorsqu'en 1929, Paul Wittgenstein lui passa commande d'une œuvre pour la main gauche. Ce pianiste autrichien avait perdu son bras droit pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, mais il continuait à jouer en adaptant lui-même des pièces et en commandant de nouvelles compositions. C'est ainsi que naquit le Concerto pour piano pour la main gauche en ré majeur, une pièce unique, sombre et tragique. En parallèle, Ravel travaillait également sur son célèbre Concerto pour piano en sol majeur. Cette œuvre brillante, initialement baptisée "Divertissement" par Ravel, est beaucoup plus légère et s'inspire de la musique de jazz ainsi que des mélodies folkloriques basques.

NL ― Maurice Ravel dacht al lang na over het componeren van een pianoconcerto toen hij in 1929 de opdracht kreeg van Paul Wittgenstein om voor hem een pianoconcerto voor de linkerhand te schrijven. Deze Oostenrijkse pianist had tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog zijn rechterarm verloren, maar arrangeerde zelf werken en gaf composities in opdracht om toch zijn pianistencarrière te kunnen verderzetten. Ravel nam de opdracht aan en zo ontstond het Pianoconcerto voor de linkerhand in D, een eendelige compositie die eerder donker en tragisch van aard is. Parallel schreef Ravel echter ook nog het Pianoconcerto in G. Dit briljante werk – dat Ravel eerst een ‘Divertissement’ wou noemen – is veel lichter van aard en put inspiratie uit jazzmuziek en Baskische volksmelodieën.
