Allegri Ensemble presents their Advent concert, ‘Behold, a shining star’.In their annual Advent performance, Allegri presents a diverse program of beautiful music for Advent and Christmas. ‘Behold, a shining star’ draws from a range of eras and yuletide contexts, from settings of the Christmas story in peacetime and in war, to lullabies fit for a baby in a crib.
At the heart of this year’s program is Francis Poulenc’s ‘Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël’. These four beloved Christmas motets begin with beautifully mystical setting of ‘O Magnum Mysterium’ which is one of three settings in the program – the others by William Byrd and Owain Park. Poulenc also gives us ‘Videntes Stellam’ and ‘Hodie Christus Natus Est’, and we pair these with Renaissance settings by Orlando Lassus and Jan Peters Sweelinck respectively.
Rounding out this concert include classics from Joanna Forbes L’Estrange and June Collin, along with exciting additions to Allegri’s repertoire from Lucy Walker, Cecilia McDowell, and Alec Roth.
As usual join us after the concert for our tradition festive supper, with champagne and Christmas cake enough for all!
