Bridge End Garden is an important Grade II* registered Victorian garden in the heart of Saffron Walden. It is considered important because it is a rare example of a late Regency garden and an early Victorian historical revival garden. Originally planted at the end of the eighteenth century by Atkinson Gibson the garden was enhanced by his son between 1837 and 1840. Sadly the garden gradually fell into decline, and by the 1970s parts had become overgrown and buildings and garden ornaments were in poor repair. Thanks to the efforts of Uttlesford District Council, the Friends of Bridge End Garden and Liz Lake Associates the gardens have been restored to their former glory and they are an oasis of tranquility in Saffron Walden, open for visitors to enjoy.
Liz Lake is a retired professional landscape architect and has been involved in the restoration of the gardens. Chair of the Friends of Bridge End Gardens she has a unique insight into the restoration and management of the gardens which she shares in this informative talk.
