Are you wondering about entering into beekeeping or new to beekeeping? This class will answer many of your questions and provide resources for answering others. Virginia state apiarist, Keith Tignor, will lecture on beginning beekeeping followed by a demonstration at the VSU apiary at Randolph farm. This workshop is designed for people interested in getting started in beekeeping, and beginning beekeepers with less than five years of experience. The class will cover essentials such as bee biology, hive management, and beekeeping equipment. Participants will learn how to maintain hives which ensures the health and productivity of a bee colony.
During the afternoon, Mr. Tignor and others will be available to demonstrate and assist in the construction of beehives, demonstration of beekeeping apparatus, and display of safety and other beekeeping tools for managing honey bees.
For your safety: Attendees for the hands-on portion of this workshop in the apiary should bring their own bee suit, wear closed-toe footwear and light-colored clothes. Important: Please be fragrance-free in order to enter the bee apiary. Veils, jackets, and gloves will be available for those without these items for safely working with honey bee colonies.
A schedule of events will be available upon arrival to the workshop.
