🥾 Hike Description
One of Sussex's most beautiful walks, this hike combines rolling chalk hills, peaceful riverside paths, ancient woodland and one of England's finest castles. Ideal for beginners looking for a varied day out, we begin by following the River Arun before climbing gently into Arundel Park, an historic landscaped estate of woodland, rolling meadows and the crystal-clear Swanbourne Lake. Overlooking it all is the striking Gothic Hiorne Tower, built in 1787 for the Duke of Norfolk. From its hilltop position, we enjoy sweeping views across the South Downs towards the coast.
Midway through the hike, we stop at a traditional riverside pub, the perfect place to relax with a drink before continuing.
The route then follows the picturesque River Arun as Arundel Castle gradually comes into full view, dominating the skyline above the town. Founded shortly after the Norman Conquest in 1067, it has evolved into one of England's grandest castles and has been home to the Dukes of Norfolk for over 400 years.
We finish in the beautifully preserved market town of Arundel, where the magnificent Arundel Castle is joined on the skyline by the impressive French Gothic Revival Arundel Cathedral. There is time to explore the town's historic streets before enjoying well earned refreshments ahead of our return to London. A memorable day combining spectacular scenery, fascinating history and one of Sussex's finest destinations.
