Beginner Contact Improv Workshop with Colours in Contact
About this Event
Colours in Contact is coming to Hamilton!
Don’t miss this chance to dive into the world of contact improv with a group who has been bringing people together through movement, play, and connection in Toronto for years!
On October 26 from 7:30-9:30 pm, Colours in Contact is bringing their playful, curious, and connection-focused approach to Hamilton for a special beginner-friendly contact improv workshop.
Never tried contact improv or learned it class-style before? Perfect. This workshop is designed specifically as an introduction - no experience needed.
Contact improv is a movement practice built around touch, weight-sharing, balance, momentum, and improvisation. Instead of learning choreography, we learn to listen with our bodies, respond to each other, and discover movement with partners as it unfolds.
Together, we’ll explore:
- Communicating through shared movement and touch
- Boundaries and consent when moving with others
- Balance, momentum, and leverage
- Listening to your own body while responding to another
- Moving through any jitters you may have
- Initial options on the floor and in flight through lifts
- Tapping into curiosity, play, creativity, and improvisation
And then we’ll put it all into practice with a small jam at the end - a chance to explore, play, and dance together with music.
At Colours in Contact, we love to tinker, experiment, discover, and learn from each other. We’re interested in what happens when we get curious about movement, let go of perfection, and create something together in the moment.
Bonus for all participants:
- Social time after the workshop: we will head out for a quick drink and/or social time after the class, and highly encourage you to join for that. Social time is part of Colours in Contact's DNA - it creates a warm community feel and helps us get to know each other and debrief after the class
- One free jam at Colours in Contact in Toronto so you can play and practice. The jams take place on Wednesdays from 6:30-9 pm on the top floor of 805 Dovercourt Rd or 3-5 pm on Sundays - Sunday indoor location TBD)
- Connection to a wonderful and supportive community of movers, across Hamilton and Toronto

About Contact Improv:
Contact Improvisation (CI) is a partner/solo/group-improvised dance style developed in 1972 by Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith, heavily influenced by Aikido and Modern dance. Due to the open-ended nature of the dance, each new dancer can add to this pot of creativity. This has led to various influences weaving in and out of the form. Some of those influences include but are not limited to Tango, Zen, Zouk, Contemporary, Ballet, Hip Hop, Qi Gong, Capoeira, Ballroom, Salsa and the list goes on. This is the beauty of CI: it can offer such an open fertile ground for exploration in expression and movement. Your voice in this dance is what will drive the creative freedom possible at Colours in Contact.
