About this Event
Join Ben Redmond of Portland Garden Services for a hands-on introduction to the art and practice of bonsai. Ben is a member of the Aesthetic Pruners Association, an experienced gardener, and a licensed landscape contractor based in Portland’s Lents neighborhood. He runs a values-forward company rooted in care for both plants and people.
Ben brings an extensive background in tree pruning, including over ten years of studying bonsai and a two-year apprenticeship with expert Lucy Davenport, a mentor and specialist in Japanese maple pruning and health. As a fourth-generation orchardist, pruning is his greatest joy and a lifelong craft.
In this workshop, you’ll:
- Learn about the origins and philosophy of bonsai
- Explore the relationship between tree, grower, and design
- Discover how to work from the roots up to establish structure and balance
- Practice pruning techniques to shape and refine your tree
- Learn about pot selection, setup, and long-term care
This session offers a blend of instruction, demonstration, and hands-on practice to introduce you to the living art of bonsai and leave with both new skills and a deeper appreciation for the trees we tend and our relationship to nature.
Gather together at 10:30. Workshop begins at 10:45.
