About this Event
Although bonsai has gained popularity among plant hobbyists, it is still often considered difficult and unapproachable by many. However, with a basic skills foundation and understanding of the art form and medium, it doesn't have to be! Perfect for beginners, this workshop will increase your confidence with bonsai and provide a hands-on opportunity for learning.
This two hour class begins with an art and cultural history tour of bonsai. Participants will then learn how to repot and wire a tree as well as practice bending and shaping techniques. The class concludes with a discussion about how to care for your tree once you get home.
Cost: $90 includes professional instruction + materials (ceramic pot, tree, soil). Students leave with their own potted Bonsai!
Pre-registration is required.
About the instructor:
Daniel Coffey’s bonsai are a slightly avant-garde blend inspired by traditional Japanese, rugged American and whimsical Chinese styles of the plant-based art form.
He’s never met a tree he didn’t like!
Daniel received his primary training during a multi-year apprenticeship under Junichiro Tanaka, fourth-generation owner of Aichien Bonsai Nursery in Nagoya Japan.
Upon returning to the States, he went directly into an internship at the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum in Washington, D.C., under former museum curator, Jack Sustic.
Now, Daniel maintains a studio in Asheville’s River Arts District where he styles and photographs his bonsai in addition to teaching. As an instructor, he openly shares his experience and techniques with students of all skill levels. In 2018, he became a member of the River Arts District Artists Association (RADA).
He has continued to grow a personal body of bonsai work over the years, lovingly cared for at his private home-based nursery in Rutherford County, NC. Some examples can be seen on Instagram @treethepeople and at Treethepeople.com
