About this Event
Join us for a 3.5 hour outdoor beginner birding workshop at White Mud Park in Edmonton. Binocular rentals and light snacks provided.
We will meet in front of the Alfred Savage Centre to embark together on 3.5 hours of outdoor learning fun enjoying the sights , and sounds of spring! Did you know there have been 192 species of birds recorded in Whitemud Park? We will identify as many as we can in this mixed wood riparian habitat, close to the North Saskatchewan River. Did you know there are 7 types of Woodpeckers that have been spotted in Whitemud Park? We will detect which Woodpeckers are around based on size and shape of tree cavities and other signs of Woodpeckers. We will identify native plants and trees together that are interdependent with birds here in the southern edge of the northern boreal forest. We keep our groups small so that we can slow down and tune into nature quietly together and connect with nature in the place we live in a deeper way.
We will provide a pair of quality Nikon Binoculars and a comfy binocular harness to use on this walk, a light snack and 3 and a half hours of outdoor learning fun. We will learn the keys to becoming a better beginner birder together, including where to look for what types of birds in the tree canopy, the ethics of birding, how your birding can positively affect birds, field marks, habitat, and migratory species we may see in the forest , on the creek and flying over head at this time of year. We will demo community science apps in the field to ID birds using sound, using a field guide and community science apps. Please dress for the weather, White Mud Park trail is fairly flat but there are a few sloped sections that may require proper footwear. Please bring water , there are public washrooms available at the trailhead as well as a water filling station. Please note the location is set as Alfred Savage Centre but the event takes place outside on the trail. We have led beginner birding events for Strathcona County, Ellis Nature Centre and the Metis Nation of Alberta. We are proud to be members of Indigenous Tourism Alberta and the Alberta 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce.
