The Rutgers Symphony Orchestra and Rutgers Choruses will present a special concert celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Mason Gross School of the Arts. The program features Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 in D minor, Op. 125 ("Choral") with soloists Teresa Perrotta (soprano), Gretchen Krupp (mezzo-soprano), Bille Bruley (tenor), and Jarrett Ott (baritone). The evening begins with Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Serenade to Music" featuring soloists Eunil Cho, soprano; Amina Goldenberg, soprano; Sonia Sinha, soprano; Jordan Calderon, countertenor; Kai Cleary, mezzo-soprano; Ryan Kalin, tenor; Matthew Zabiegala, tenor; Kieran Calderaro, baritone; Joe Chappel, bass-baritone; Sean Masino, baritone; and Erick Moesteller, baritone.
A special pre-concert talk will take place in Nicholas Music Center 6:40–7:10 p.m. on the date of the concert. As we perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony to mark the 50th Anniversary of Mason Gross School of the Arts, Nicholas Chong (assistant professor of musicology) surveys how one of the world’s most famous musical works has been used for a variety of public commemorations and celebrations in the two centuries since it was written. What makes this piece of music so appropriate for such special occasions? And could this aspect of its performance history make it harder for us to perceive its complexities and ambiguities?
It is recommended that patrons interested in attending the pre-performance talk obtain concert tickets in advance.
Tickets start at $9 (incl. fees).
