About the Programme
Hedwig Anuar, as the director of the National Library of Singapore from 1965 until her retirement in 1988, has contributed greatly towards promoting and developing libraries here. A new book Vestiges: Essays 1945–1946 (credited to Hedwig Aroozoo, the name she used prior to her marriage) features Mrs Anuar’s writings before she turned 20. This panel will discuss the book’s significance in identifying the environment in which young Hedwig grew up, her views towards the societal issues of those years and how they correlate with current policies. Audience members can share anecdotes of their interactions with Mrs Anuar, whether personal or official, and reflect upon the impact she’s made on our reading and literacy scene.
This programme is part of Singapore Writers Festival 2024 and is co-presented with the National Library Board.
