An ecosystem engineer and an exterminator walk into a bar… or happen to be wildlife living next door to us in our urban ecosystem! With a little luck, and the expertise of Jason and Kirby, we’ll be able to see these two ecologically and economically important mammals. Learn more about the beavers and bats living along the Oldman River here in Lethbridge – why they are important and what you can do to help them thrive.
Bats are quite common in urban areas, but most people rarely see them. People always seem surprised to hear bats are in the city – but they are here! The first step in bat conservation is to learn what you can about this mysterious but helpful mammal.
Beavers have long been seen as pests, but those in the know understand the importance of these ecosystem engineers for many other species, including humans! We’ll learn why they are important for our waters and how beaver believers like Kirby are working to encourage co-existence with these industrious rodents.
An evening wander by the river with these biologists will give us a great chance to see our bat and beaver neighbours. We’ll also be able to use bat detectors to “hear” and identify the night fliers. Participants will learn many new facts about bats and beavers and gain a new appreciation for these river-valley residents.
