A Beachcomber’s Guide to FossilsBy Bob, Pam, and Ashby Gale
Bob and Pam have collected fossils since 1986, when they enlisted the help of the naturalist Rudy Mancke to lead a guided beach walk at Edisto Island, South Carolina. He introduced them to the fossil world, and they were immediately hooked. Since then, they and their son, Ashby, have built a significant collection and added to their fossil expertise with countless field visits and research. Ashby has gone on to pursue paleontology as a profession. The Gales have collected at sites in Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, and even Australia, ranging from land sites to cliff faces and sandy shores.
Bob Gale holds a bachelor of science degree in geology and biology from the University of South Carolina and is retired with 25 years service as Ecologist & Public Lands Director for MountainTrue, an environmental nonprofit organization in Asheville, North Carolina. Much of this book's writing was artfully penned by Bob.
Pam Gale, a working professional artist, earned a bachelor of art in art education from Limestone University, in Gaffney, South Carolina. In 2018, she founded Majik Studios in Asheville, where participants of all ages can learn marbling, the ancient art of floating paint on a thick, watery surface. She drew the illustrations in this guide and researched the 300-plus “Did You Know?” facts on the identification pages.
Ashby Gale, who dreamed of being a paleontologist from an early age, received a bachelor of science in environmental science from Appalachian State University, in Boone, North Carolina. True to his dream, Ashby is now a paleontologist and owner of Charleston Fossil Adventures, LLC, a tour company he founded in 2016, in Charleston, South Carolina. CFA partners with area institutions and museums to donate scientifically significant fossils, ensuring new records and unusual occurrences are accessible within the academic community and not lost to private collectors. Ashby was responsible for most of the research that led to the classification and identification of the specimens in this book, as well as taking photographs of the specimens.
Now in its fifth printing, “A Beachcomber’s Guide to Fossils” has filled a void in the literature to assist the general public in identifying fossils found during their beachcombing adventures. Designed like a field identification guide, the book’s 544 pages contain a wide range of features.
Over 325 pages are devoted to the identification pages, accurately identifying fossils with multiple photos showing each side. Accompanying text describes the physical characteristics and taxonomy of the fossil. A side panel provides quick identifying features, metric and standard measurements of the specimen, the geologic time period of the fossil, and a comparative density scale. At the bottom of each page is a fun “Did You Know” fact to provide light-hearted information to the casual reader.
Interspersed throughout the book’s sections are twelve “Species Highlights” which provide accounts of different animal groups and their evolutionary history. These articles are accompanied by hand-drawn color illustrations and additional photos that stimulate the reader's imagination about the animals' appearance while they were alive. To make it easier for the reader to identify their finds, an illustrated glossary is included alongside the text glossary to highlight minute details.
The Gale family is excited to be in attendance at The Book Loft, Amelia Island, FL on September 21, 1- 4 time to sign your personal copy of “A Beachcomber’s Guide to Fossils”. If you haven't purchased your own guide yet, The Book Loft will have copies available on site.
Have a fossil you can’t identify? Bring it along, we would love to help with identification!
