Health research can improve the lives of patients everywhere. Help identify challenges and barriers for ethnic minority groups.
About this Event

Have you ever wondered what health research is being done in Ireland?

What health issues are most important to you and your community?

What are the health care barriers in your community?

What challenges/barriers makes it hard for your community to join health research discussions?

Do you think someone with personal experience could raise awareness about health issues better than a scientist? And, if so, why?

What is PPI?

Public and patient involvement in research (known as PPI) is an approach to research that fosters collaboration between people with lived experiences and researchers. The goal of PPI is to improve research and ensure research can make a positive impact on all our lives.
What will I do at this event?

  • Work with us to create a survey about health research awareness for ethnic minority communities.
  • Let's discuss the challenges or barriers that may stop community members from joining public & patient involvement (PPI) activities.
  • Hear from community partners with personal experience of health conditions.

Event Format:

At the event, you will join small groups with facilitators and have support from note-takers and translators if needed.

Workshop (part 1):
Why are diverse voices not represented in PPI today? What health inequities are experienced by minority communities? What are the challenges to being involved in PPI in research?
This information will help create survey questions about health research / PPI awareness for ethnic minority communities.

Health Journey: My Story:
Hear from a panel of 3 community members who have experienced health inequities or conditions and will share their stories. Those who share their stories are well supported before and during the event and paid for taking part.

Workshop (part 2):
Discuss the impact of hearing patient stories and how lived experiences may encourage people from minority communities to get involved in health research.

Join us for a light lunch during the event. Quiet space available for Dhuhr, Asr.

About Us:

The Patient Voice in Cancer Research (PVCR) is an initiative to build connections between those affected by cancer and researchers. This positively impacts on cancer research and patient outcomes.

We run a number of events and workshops throughout the year, online and at venues around Ireland. These events and workshops are free and open to all. We welcome everybody, particularly those from minority communities.
