Be Funny on Paper: Humour Writing Workshop
What makes for a funny line, passage, or story? How can you infuse your writing with your own particular sense of humour? This workshop will teach you techniques for expressing the comical in your writing. In a low-pressure environment, you can take part in exercises from creating a one-liner to mixing genres for unexpected results. We’ll look at short examples from nonfiction (Maeve Dunigan), poetry (Susan Holbrook), and fiction (Jane Austen, Percival Everett).
⌚ When: Tuesday, August 11, 6-8 PM
📍 Where: Librairie Phoenix Bookstore, 5928 Sherbrooke Ouest, NDG

💻 What to bring: yourself, something to write with, and (optionally) a short example of writing that you find funny!
👩🏼🏫 Who/whom to blame: Kirsten Shute (she/her). When she was five, she wrote the name of her favourite continent all over walls and furniture, in permanent marker, AND MISSPELLED IT—one bookshelf still bears the scar “Antartcica.” Since then, she has written Fanfiction Is for Teenage Girls (Cactus Press, 2025); other poems and stories have appeared in Soliloquies, Twigs and Leaves, and The Claremont Review. Currently, she’s at work on a novel set in 2001 Dorval and a poetry collection about language immersion in Germany. On Instagram, she posts about books and local events at @kirsten_shute_writing. You can often find her at the Chimera Open Mic at Librairie Phoenix Bookstore and Accent Open Mic at Bar Le Record.
