BCMS at the Leo: Lush

Our February program, “Lush”, is full of energy and life and will excite your spirit. We begin with Dorothy Carwithen’s adventuresome and creative String Quartet No. 1, a true essay in thought and expression. This opening work will prepare you for Ravel’s hypnotizing Introduction and Allegro for flute, clarinet, harp and strings. Commissioned in 1905 by the Érard harp manufacturers to showcase their newly chromatic harp, Ravel's masterpiece has been described as a miniature harp concerto. 

After a brief intermission, we’ll bring you back down to Earth with Brahms’ Quintet in G Major, composed in the last decade of his life. Brahms intended this piece to be his last and it started out as his Symphony No. 5. His addition of a 2nd viola to the string quartet set up made this work even more symphonic sounding.
