Ekiden is a distance relay race originating in Japan, involving teams of runners covering a multi-stage road course. A unique feature of ekiden is the tasuki, a sash passed from runner to runner instead of a traditional baton. As a form of competition, the first ekiden race took place in 1917. Running through the day and night, teams of 23 runners covered the 508 km from Kyoto to Tokyo.
The most popular Ekiden, The Hakone Ekiden, has TV viewership in Japan of 65 million people, a level of attention comparable to the Super Bowl or Champions League Final.
The Bay to Cove Ekiden will cross the North Shore from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cover over the Spirt Trail, roads some easy trails. Less vert than the Baden Powell but still scenic and challenging. The course will be divided into 4 stages with 3 check points. Teams can be 2-4 people or you can run the whole course “Solo Ekiden” style on your own.
