Bawming the Thorn – Appleton Thorn’s Historic Village Celebration
Saturday 20th June 2026 • From 12:00pm
Join the vibrant community of Appleton Thorn for Bawming the Thorn, a much‑loved village tradition dating back centuries and celebrated each year on the third Saturday of June.
The festivities begin at 12:00pm at Appleton Thorn Primary School, where everyone gathers to form a joyful parade towards the historic Thorn tree. Following the success of last year’s addition, the event once again features an uplifting Samba parade — led by the school’s very own Samba band, filling the procession with colour, rhythm, and festival energy.
This year, the wider community is warmly invited to join the Samba workshop before the parade and take part in the procession itself. Whether you’ve drummed before or are brand new to Samba, it’s an exciting hands‑on way to become part of this living tradition.
At the village Thorn, the ceremony continues as children decorate the tree with flowers and ribbons and dance around it. In keeping with tradition, the village choir will lead everyone in singing the traditional Bawming Song, bringing the whole community together in a moment of shared history and celebration.
After the ceremony, the festivities return to the school for Bawmfest, beginning at 1:00pm — an afternoon packed with live music, delicious food, stalls, children’s activities, and performances from pupils, local musicians, and community groups.
