The Battle of Falkirk Muir (1746) Trust are excited to host our next conference that will commemorate the Battle’s 279th anniversary.

Conference Content



Speakers on the day include:
  • Dr Georgia Vullinghs - “A Crown of Everlasting Glory”: the Afterlife of Maria Clementina Sobieska in Material and Visual Culture
  • Phil Carradice - Women of the Jacobite Rebellions, A Forgotten Army
  • Count Peter Pininski - The Stuart-Radziwill Circle in Rome and Poland 1725-1795
  • Professor Edward Corp - The Jacobite Order of the Thistle
  • Paul Macdonald - Swordsmen of the Risings - A presentation detailing several martial legends of the Jacobite Risings, delivered along with original period arms
  • Murtagh Harman - to be confirmed



In addition to the speakers, on the day there will also be:
  • Prince Charles Edward Stuart at the door to greet you as you come in (in the form of a life-sized mannequin)!
  • Exhibition of some major works of art from the Battle of Falkirk Muir Trust collection including:
  1. Alexis simon Belle - King James VII.
  2. Robert Strange - Charles edward Stuart
  3. Cosmo Alexander - The secret Jacobite lady
  4. Unknown artist - Lady Ann Livingston, Countess of Kilmarnock
  5. Allan Ramsay - Brigadier General Sir John Mordaunt KB
  6. Unkown artist - Lieutenant General Henry Hawley

  • Also on display:
  1. Bronze bust of Prince Charles Edward Stuart copied from the original clay bust created by Lemoyne in 1747.
  2. Prince Charles' Death mask.
  3. A bust of Maria Clementina Sobieska copied from the original plaster bust which is in Rome.
  • Trust Sales: for example we will have Falkirk Muir large & small battle prints, mugs, miniature copies of Bonnie Prince Charlie's Lemyone bust, death mask and Clemetina Sobieska bust and Culloden battle prints for sale.
  • Book sales: we will have copies of our author's books for sale which they have offered to sign.



Speakers Information

Paul Macdonald

Paul Macdonald was raised in the Moidart area of Lochaber, a land steeped in Jacobite legend.

He works as a professional custom sword and knife-maker, historical fencing master and traditional story-teller.

Professor Edward Corp

Edward Corp was Professor of British History at the University of Toulouse. He has written a history of the Stuart court in exile (1689-1766) in three volumes, a biography of Sir David Nairne (of Sandford in Fife) and about eighty articles in books and peer reviewed academic journals. He has curated and written the catalogues of two major exhibitions on the exiled Stuarts, at the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye and the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. In 2022 he was co-author (with Peter Pininski) of the catalogue of the centenary exhibition at the West Highland Museum.

Count Peter Pininski

Peter Pininski was born in London in 1956 and lives in Warsaw, Poland. A graduate of Sotheby’s Institute of Art and an ex-investment bank director, he has been chairman and a member of the supervisory boards of various public companies. He has lectured on the last Stuarts for institutions such as the National Trust for Scotland and been a guest speaker at the Edinburgh International Book Festival. He is the president of the Lanckoronski Foundation, Liechtenstein, a member of the advisory board of the Lviv National Art Gallery in the Ukraine, as well as the Ossolineum National Institute in Poland, a member of the Biography Committee of the Polish Academy of Learning, a landowner, and the author of various publications on the exiled Stuarts, his most recent book being Bonnie Prince Charlie – His Life, Family, Legend, published by National Museums Scotland in 2022

Phil Carradice

Phil Carradice is a poet, novelist and historian. He has published over eighty books, covering various aspects of history, biography, travel and fiction. His most recent books are 'Witchcraft and Witch Hunts Through the Ages' and 'Women of the Jacobite Rebellions.' In January 2025 his next book 'Assassinations that Shaped the Ancient World' is due out. All from Pen and Sword publishers - contact them if you need copies to sell. A former Headteacher he now works as a full time writer. He broadcasts regularly on BBC TV and Radio, his most recent series of programmes being 'Hitler's Handmaidens' on Sky Television.

Dr Georgia Vullinghs

Dr Georgia Vullinghs is Curator of Renaissance and Early Modern Scottish History at National Museums Scotland with responsibility for Scottish history collections and displays covering the period 1450 – 1750. She holds a PhD in History of Art from the University of Edinburgh (2021). This project examined material and visual culture produced and used in response to Stuart exile, and loyalty to the Jacobite cause. The Jacobite collections now form a core part of her work at the museum, although Georgia is also interested in histories of women, and histories of emotions through material culture.




Additional Details

The event is on Saturday 18 January 2024 from 10am to 4pm (arrival from 9:30am).

Tickets costs - Adult: £30 or Concession: £25 (please note eventbrite will add a processing fee). Any profits will go towards the Battle of Falkirk Muir Trust.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided throughout the day.

The conference will be held at Falkirk Forth Valley College Campus, Grangemouth Road, Falkirk, FK2 9AD. We are delighted to be working with Forth Valley College this year to provide us with great conference facilities.

There is plenty of free parking at the venue and it is also accessible via public transport being located within 1 mile (20minute walk) of Falkirk Grahamston train station.

The venue is disabled friendly.
