BASICS OF I CHING DIVINATION with STEVE DAY

Where: studio close to Mont-Royal est and De La Roche
COST: Sliding scale $50-$120. A non-refundable deposit of $50 will be asked to secure your spot.
A copy of the I Ching by Hilary Barrett will be given to each participant, and ongoing support after the course will be available for your reading.
WHAT IS THE I CHING: The I Ching or Yi Jing is a 3000 year-old book of divination, though its ideas evolved in the human practice of divining with bones (scapulomancy) and tortoise shells (plastromancy), which long predated the existence of the book, and which are practiced to this day.
Once written down, divining with the I Ching was long practiced in China, Japan, and Korea, before gaining popularity in the west in the 20th century through the Wilhelm/Baynes translation, foreworded by Carl Jung. Nowadays, divination is mostly conducted by throwing three coins six times, to construct a “hexagram”image, often with an associated “relating hexagram” and changing lines as well.
ABOUT THE COURSE: In this workshop, you will be introduced to ‘Uncle Yi’ through theory and exercises, and ultimately through casting a reading of your own.
First you will be coached in developing a question — from “show me my relationship with alcohol/my dog/my partner?” to “what is the best way to be with this breakup?” to “give me a compliment, what am I at my best?” to “what if I get a cat?”
Then, you and other students will pose your questions to the oracle and interpret its answers: first individually in contact with the source text and with the teacher’s support, and then in the context of a gently creative group discussion with other students.
You will be guided on how to connect sincerely with the reading, and on how to avoid common pitfalls and difficulties, which may lead to delusion or confusion in your divination.
You’ll leave the workshop with a copy of the I Ching, able to shape you own questions and interface with the oracle and its rich imagery.
Support with your readings, and integration into your life, will be available after the course, if needed.
TOPICS COVERED:
-History and lineage of I Ching divination.
-The role of sacredness and ritual, the perversion of “spiritual materialism”, and how to find your personal approach to this.
-How to cook up a mature and useful question.
-How to cast a reading with three coins.
-Symbolism of trigrams, how to connect intuitively, physically, immediately with the reading’s imagery.
-How to work with different translations, how to know what to trust.
-Strategies to work confidently with readings with multiple (sometimes contradictory) lines.
-How to digest a difficult, painful, or confrontational reading.
-Bias, hope, fear: tips to avoid confusing yourself with Yi.
The readings the students receive will to an extent determine which specific ideas, concepts, and techniques will be taught, which may include:
-Fan Yao, complementary, shadow, hexagrams
-Humour in the I Ching

Tout d'abord, vous serez guidé dans l'élaboration d'une question - de « montrez-moi ma relation avec l'alcool, mon chien ou mon partenaire “ à ” quelle est la meilleure façon de vivre cette rupture “, en passant par ” faites-moi un compliment, quel est mon meilleur profil “ et ” et si j'avais un chat ? ».
Ensuite, vous et d'autres étudiants poserez vos questions à l'oracle et interpréterez ses réponses : d'abord individuellement en contact avec le texte source et avec le soutien de l'enseignant, puis dans le contexte d'une discussion de groupe légèrement créative avec d'autres étudiants.
Vous serez guidé sur la manière de vous connecter sincèrement à la lecture, et sur la manière d'éviter les pièges et les difficultés courantes, qui peuvent conduire à l'illusion ou à la confusion dans votre divination.
Vous quitterez l'atelier avec une copie du Yi King, capable de formuler vos propres questions et d'interagir avec l'oracle et sa riche imagerie.
Un soutien pour vos lectures et leur intégration dans votre vie sera disponible après le cours, si nécessaire.

Je suis dramaturge, marionnettiste et clown, et je pratique la divination par le Yi depuis douze ans.
