WHY Learn KULITAN?For centuries, the Kapampángan Language has been written in the Spanish orthography using the Roman script. In an attempt to decolonize Kapampángan writing, the Katipunan writers from the town of Wáwâ (Guagua), began to reform Kapampángan writing in the late 19th century according to José Rizal’s proposed reform on Tagalog orthography which he based on the Tagalog precolonial script, Baybayin.
Unlike Tagálog however, the Kapampángan Language makes a phonemic distinction between long and short vowels. This can not be accurately represented via Rizal’s Baybayin-based orthography. Yet due to the compulsory teaching of the Tagalog language in schools, Kapampángans started to write their language in the Baybayin-based Tagalog orthography.
To totally decolonize Kapampángan writing from Spanish, English and Tagalog, as well as accurately represent the sounds of the Kapampángan Language, the Kapampángan Language Services Unit under the Office of the Mayor and the Sínúpan Singsing Center for Kapampángan Cultural Heritage, in collaboration with the Ágúman Sínúpan Singsing, Inc., we present to you our first Basic Kulitan Class for the year!!!
This basic Kulitan Class is FREE and OPEN to the PUBLIC. The class will be conducted by none other than our executive director and 2010 Most Outstanding Kapampángan Awardee for Culture, Michael R.M. Pangilinan. We only ask that you come on time and bring your own writing materials.
