Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)

Adult leaders are busy, and BALOO is one of the best investments you can make in your Cub Scouting role. This practical, hands-on training gives you the skills, confidence, and resources to make Cub Scout camping easier to plan, safer to run, and more enjoyable for everyone involved.
Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO) is required for a minimum of one adult on every Cub Scout Pack overnight camping trip. More importantly, it helps leaders understand how to deliver a fun, successful outdoor program without having to learn everything through trial and error.
This 1.5-day course combines online learning with an overnight outdoor experience where you'll gain practical knowledge in:
Campsite selection and setup
Outdoor cooking
Program planning
Health and safety requirements
Age-appropriate Cub Scout outdoor activities
Best practices for successful Pack camping events
Whether you're a Cubmaster, Committee Member, Den Leader, or another Pack volunteer, BALOO will help you feel more prepared and confident when leading outdoor adventures.
Training Requirements
Online Prerequisite Participants must complete the BALOO online training through the Scouting America Learning Center before attending the in-person course. Please bring a printed or digital copy of your completion certificate.
Practical Overnight Session The in-person portion is a hands-on overnight training experience where participants practice the skills and concepts needed to run a successful Cub Scout outdoor program.
Both the online and in-person components must be completed to earn BALOO certification, achieve "Trained" status, and receive the official BALOO recognition patch.
