In Baritones Can Sing Too!, South African theatre star Stephan van der Walt (Jersey Boys, Chicago, We Will Rock You, Liefling) and acclaimed musician-producer Jacob Funk (Bernice West, Ghapi, Joshua na die Reën) take centre stage to prove, once and for all, that the world’s most celebrated singers aren’t all tenors.
In a musical world where the high notes so often steal the spotlight, this duo champions the rich, resonant heart of the baritone voice — from the effortless swing of Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, to the grit of Johnny Cash, the charm of Tom Jones, the anthems of Neil Diamond, and the contemporary soul of George Ezra and Josh Groban.
Armed with nothing more than a piano, double bass, acoustic guitar, and their own musical ingenuity, van der Walt and Funk weave personal stories, audience banter, and masterful arrangements into a night that’s equal parts concert, cabaret, and conversation. Songs you thought you knew — Fly Me to the Moon, Ring of Fire, Sweet Caroline, Budapest, I Will Wait — are reimagined with warmth, wit, and just the right amount of swagger.
Written by van der Walt and Cameron Botha, with musical arrangements by Funk and direction by Botha, the show is brought to life by the Naledi-nominated OAK Entertainment team.
