About this Event
Madeira is as romantic a wine as it is unlikely. A windswept volcanic rock in the Atlantic, Madeira was the last stopping point on the route from Europe to the West Indies and the Americas. An essential port of call to take on water, the wines that were produced on the mountainous vineyards were adapted to suit the needs of long sea voyages. Aged oxidatively and fortified at varying levels of sweetness, these were sturdy wines and it was found that over a hot sea voyage their character, far from wilting, improved. But while Madeira may feel like a relic of a forgotten age, there are green shoots of rebirth, and the leading light is undoubtedly Barbeito whose wines have found a home in the cellars of collectors and on the lists of the best restaurants around the world. Their untiring champion in the UK is their importer Raymond Reynolds, who has done more than most to revive the fortunes of these historic vineyards. Tonight we are thrilled to be joined by Ray for a masterclass featuring six exceptional Madeiras from Barbeito including fine old reserves and rare single vineyard bottlings of deep maturity and finesse.
Our shop tastings start at 7.30pm and run for approximately one-and-a-half to two hours. We will taste 6-8 wines on a theme, and bread, cheese and charcuterie is provided to match with the wines. Due to the communal nature of the tasting, we are unable to cater for dietary requirements.
