Bank Swallow Survey
About this Event
Join us to survey bank swallows a species at risk along the Nashwaak River. Bank swallows are an aerial insectivor species that nest in eroded riverbanks and quarries. We will be monitoring bank swallow populations at various locations in the watershed! We will meet at the The Unity Community Centre from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
Nashwaak staff and volunteers will split into teams and drive to different locations across the watershed. Each team will have at least one staff member, who will guide you through the count and tell you more about what we do. Most locations are on private property, so access to these properties outside of the survey days is not encouraged. After the count, everyone will meet back at the landing to discuss what was observed during the day and wrap up the event.
We'll be visiting several sites in the Nashwaak Watershed throughout the morning, and we recommend bringing:
- Long pants and water shoes, as we may need to step into the river to get a closer look at the Bank Swallow colonies.
- A hat, layers and sunscreen for changing weather.
- Binoculars (we’ll have extras available if you need them but please let us know in advance.).
