America 250: B&O Unlocked
Celebrate America’s Story—One Railcar at a Time
The B&O Railroad Museum’s annual Unlocked series returns—this year with a special tribute to America’s 250th anniversary. Each month, step inside a different piece of rail history and experience the stories that helped build a nation. In honor of this milestone, American Freedom Train No. 1 will be opened twice in 2026—January and July—offering a rare chance to celebrate the spirit of freedom and innovation that defines America’s rail legacy.
You’ll also have the opportunity to step inside the newly restored B&O No. 3316 “Washington” Observation Tavern Car.
Become a B&O Member and receive free admission for each collection piece. Don’t miss this opportunity to unlock the doors on these historic pieces!

B&O No. 445 “Royal Blue Coach”:
Wednesday 9/16, Saturday 9/19, Sunday 9/20 (10 a.m. – 4 p.m.)

This September, we are unlocking the B&O No. 445 to celebrate the 130th anniversary of the Royal Blue Line.
The No. 445 passenger coach was built by the Pullman Company for the Delaware, Lackawanna, & Western Railroad (DL&W) c.1890. In many ways, it was a standard late-1800s day coach. In 1927, the No. 445 was rebuilt and repainted to resemble a car from the Royal Blue, the B&O’s elite flagship passenger train connecting Washington, DC, and New York City.
B&O president John Work Garrett began planning the Royal Blue Line in 1872 to compete with the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR). The first Royal Blue train began services in 1890, and the line was completed in 1896. Its completion was marked by the construction of iconic Mount Royal Station in Baltimore.
Come visit the B&O No. 445 to experience what it was like to travel on the Royal Blue Line!
