Please email us at [email protected] or message us on Facebook for tips on where to get used gear or loaner gear (or read the FAQ below)
We also strongly encourage you to attend our meet and greet to ask questions and learn more about the gear required. July 27th or 28th, more info and location will be shared soon!
Q - This event is for BIPOC skaters - how will you determine who is or is not BIPOC?
Identity is based on self-determination and honor system; if you think you should be here, then you should!
Q - What should I wear and bring?
- Snug workout clothes (we practice in a community center so be mindful of the family atmosphere!)
- A spill-proof water bottle
- Skate wheels appropriate for a slick gym floor (hybrid wheels or wheels with a lower durometer are best. 88-95)
- Skate tools for adjusting your skates/toe stops/wheels/trucks
- Full roller derby gear (see above list)
Q - What should I do before BIPOC Slam?
- Review our Code of Conduct information at http://tinyurl.com/RRRCode2024
- Review the WFTDA.com website to learn more about the skill set we play under, the WFTDA gender policy, and WFTDA insurance.
- Watch some YouTube videos of roller derby skills to see the varying levels roller derby is played at
- Make sure you’re vaccinated and boosted to protect your fellow participants during this full-contact sport.
- Join our Discord for updates about Boot Camp and to get to know us! https://discord.gg/qeTzncVxbD
- Get a friend (or several) to come with you!
Q - I haven't skated in a long time. Should I attend BIPOC Slam?
We do require that you can stay upright while skating forward. Other than that, feel free to join us for BIPOC Slam! There's no requirement to join our league after attending. It's just to have fun, get a workout, work on skate skills and derby skills, meet Rainier skaters, and make new friends!
Q - Am I too old/fat/skinny/out-of-shape/short/tall to play roller derby?
Roller derby is for EVERYONE. If you feel uncertain, take a look at our team values and/or contact a current skater first or email us at [email protected] – we want you to be successful and feel awesome!
Q - Derby sounds expensive! How much is this?
This event is FREE to attend! Donations are always welcomed but absolutely not necessary. Loaner gear is also available.
Q - Do I have to attend every session?
No, but you will have more success in your roller derby journey if you are able to attend each night so you can build your skills and build the muscles required to skate and play roller derby. Our sessions are organized to build on skills. If you miss a session, you might miss out on an important skill.
If you're unable to attend every session, you are welcome and encouraged to attend our regular practices. Attending a session with PFM Roller Derby or meeting up with teammates at the rink to practice skills is another great way to make up for missed practices. We are a flexible league and want you to grow and be able to play derby as safely as possible.
Q - What are regular team practices like? What can I do if I attend?
You are always welcome at our regular RRR practices (Sundays 2-4pm and Tuesdays 7-9pm). These practices will have a skills section and a scrimmage section. You can participate according to your level of comfort and safety, and additional coaching will be available if you choose to practice skills on your own during scrimmage time. Scrimmage time is also a great time to observe and get a good idea of how derby works!
Q - Do I have to have skates or other gear to attend BIPOC Slam?
We have a gear lending library, but please contact us in advance if you need gear so we can make sure we are able to accommodate. Send us a message on our facebook or instagram accounts or email us at [email protected] to talk about loaner gear. The Meet and Greet session is a great time to come and try on gear to see if we have equipment that will work for you.
Q - Can I use inline skates?
Roller derby is played on quad skates only. Referees are allowed to use inline skates but you cannot do derby drills or play derby in inlines. We will not be teaching inline skate skills.
Q - I want to buy skates and gear because I don't own any or want to upgrade. Where can I get advice?
There are a lot of resources online and in the Seattle area. There are skate shops in North Seattle, Renton, and Tacoma. There are groups on Facebook such as Roller Derby Recyclables and PNW Used Derby Gear. You can also ask a member of RRR if they could ask around for you. Start by making a post on our discord server in the bootcamp channel. You can also DM us on our facebook or instagram accounts with gear questions and needs or send us an email at [email protected].

Q - Is health insurance required to attend BIPOC Slam or to join the league later?
No; however, you should understand the full risks of learning on roller skates. RRR will require you to sign a waiver saying you are aware of the risks of roller skating and derby and you take full responsibility for your injuries. IF YOU ARE INJURED, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR MEDICAL EXPENSES AND LOST WAGES.
Q - I'm an experienced derby skater already. Should I attend?
This program is geared toward skaters starting either roller skating, derby, or both from scratch. We will not reach advanced techniques, but there is room for experienced skaters to hone their basic skills and to lift up newbies who are less skilled than they are. If this level of skating and this environment sound appealing to you, then yes! You are welcome to attend.
We are a team of intersectional accomplices. We do not tolerate right-wing politics, ableism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, fatphobia, body-shaming, Islamophobia, antisemitism, sexism, cultural appropriation, or slurs/abuse/harassment of any kind. When you apply to join RRR, you will be required to sign our Anti-Harassment Policy and Code of Conduct. If this sounds great to you, what are you waiting for?? Sign up now!
