Very pleased to announce: Saturday, January 18 is international Baltic Porter Day and we’re celebrating with Portland’s first ever Baltic Porter Invitational!This Polish dark beer event starts at noon and we’ll be featuring 10 Pacific Northwest-brewed Baltic porters, including our own gold medal-winning Neptune Baltic porter and guest taps from Single Hill (Yakima), Wander (Bellingham), and Portland’s Away Days, Zoiglhaus, ForeLand, Little Beast and more.
In addition, we’ll be serving up our famous Zapiekanka - a pizza-reminiscent Polish street food - and our FULL Pierogi menu of stuffed dumplings including Potato and Farmer’s Cheese, Caramelized Onion and Potato, and Mushroom and Cabbage.
Also of note: a Polish bottle share will occur at 2 p.m. back in the brewhouse, featuring a small selection of Polish imports thanks to special guest Pawel Pilat, owner of Poland’s first privately owned hop breeding program Polish Hops. You are welcome to bring your own Polish beer to the share as well!
BALTIC PORTER
Baltic porter is a Polish dark beer style known for its complex malt character and flavor notes of caramel, toffee and dried fruit. It’s stronger than a traditional English porter, typically landing at around 8% ABV. The style’s origin dates back to the 1800’s when Britain began exporting their porters across the Baltic Sea. Porters became so popular in Poland that local brewers attempted to brew it on their own. Due to the cold climate, however, the Polish brewers upped the malt bill and replaced the porter’s ale yeast with lager yeast (which ferments at a lower temperature), reinventing the style as a Baltic porter.
