A free community event run by volunteers and hosted by Ballarat Community Garden.
Despite being run in winter our July event is one of our biggest swaps of the year. It’s time for grafting, propagating, sharing your winter harvest and planning ahead for the warmer weather.
Our July event will feature a selection of seasonal fruit, vegetables, herbs, plants and preserves. Everyone is welcome to bring something to swap or make a small donation to the host (Ballarat Community Garden). Please don’t let a lack of swappable items keep you away. We’d love to have you attend and there’s always excess produce, seeds, plants etc looking for new homes. 🪴🧄
The Ballarat Seed Bank will be open with a range of seeds ready for Spring planting. 🌱
Hardwood cuttings
It’s time to propagate grapes, figs, currants, pomegranate, kiwi (male and female labelled separately) kiwi berries, quince, hazelnut, elderflowers and many other edible and/or useful plants from hardwood cuttings now. 🍇🥝
Dig, Divide & Share
Inspired by the Bega Valley Seed Savers we’re adding a new section to our July swap.
It’s the time of year to dig and divide plants grown from runners, suckers, corms, crowns and tubers. If you have spare to share please bring them along.
You might think about bringing comfrey, rhubarb, berry canes (raspberry, blackberry, bramble berry), artichokes, asparagus, hops, water chestnuts, horseradish, strawberry runners, oca, sedums, yarrow, mint, oregano, marjoram, chives, society garlic, garlic chives, dahlias etc. 🍓🌱
We’d love to have people contribute healthy fruit tree scion suitable for grafting. Apples, pears, nashi, plum, cherry and quince are usually popular with other gardeners. If you can help please let us know. 🍎🍏
Don't think you have any produce to swap? Please come along anyway, have a cuppa, a piece of cake, meet local gardeners, wander through the Community Garden. There’s always produce looking for a new home.
