STORYTELLING FOR DOCUMENTARY FILMMAKING
Join editors Toi Juan Shannon and Sizwe Chapman for an engaging workshop on the art and craft of documentary storytelling, Thursday, October 1, 2026, 6:30pm-8:00pm at Emerson College Los Angeles, 5960 Sunset Blvd, Los Angles, CA 90028.
Drawing from their extensive experience in both feature-length and short-form documentaries, they will explore how editors shape narrative, develop character, build emotional resonance, and create compelling story arcs from real-life footage. Through examples, discussion, and practical insights, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the unique storytelling approaches required for documentaries of different lengths and formats.

Toi Juan Shannon
Toi Juan Shannon, editor and AVID Certified Instructor, is an accomplished and forward-thinking editor whose work demonstrates a rare blend of narrative intuition, technical excellence, and cinematic artistry. His expertise spans an array of formats, including feature films, documentaries, short films, and television productions. Toi Juan has collaborated with a host of prestigious networks, such as NBC, CBS, E!, NFL, TBS, BET, and Anchor Bay Entertainment, to name a few.
His body of work also includes the documentary; What do You Have To Lose?, television pilots, Chronicles of A Douchebag and Journey to America and music videos for “Lemoyne Alexander”.
Dedicated, innovative, and always evolving, Toi Juan Shannon stands out as an editor whose craftsmanship not only enhances storytelling but also deeply resonates with audiences. His latest Produced By credit for the short, “The Homegoing” is exemplifies his rounded talent.

SIZWE CHAPMAN
Sizwe Chapman is an Editor and content producer from Jackson, Mississippi. As a graduate of Morehouse College and an experienced industry professional, he has gained valuable experience as a current Assistant Editor at Saylor Agency and freelance editor for clients such as Starz, Beats by Dre, and SpringHill alongside other endeavors in producing, editing, and cinematography. Editing is his passion because of the ability to capture the abstract elements of a story and enhance it with an additional layer of creativity and perspective.
