The Ngaio Marsh Awards, in association with Warkworth Library and Auckland Libraries, invites booklovers to a criminally good evening in 'Brokenwood', featuring five talented Kiwi storytellers.
As crime and thriller writing - whether crime fiction or true crime
- has evolved from puzzle-like mysteries to modern novels delving deeply into people and place, it has continued to intrigue readers around the world. What makes it so captivating?
Swedish-born bestselling author Madeleine Eskedahl sets her popular mysteries in the Matakana wine region. She will be joined in conversation by past Ngaio Marsh Awards winner Fiona Sussman, TV producer and true crime writer Angus Gillies, and Hibiscus Coast author and first-time crime writer Robyn Cotton. Award-winning Gulf Harbour short story writer Stephen Ross will keep the peace and cross-examine the offenders.
Our panel will discuss what draws them to tales of intrigue and thrills, how they craft and convey memorable characters - whether fictional or real, and the impact of our local settings, real-life issues, and universal themes on their writing.
WHEN: Thursday, 3 April 2025
WHERE: Old Masonic Hall, 3 Baxter Street, Warkworth
WHEN: 5pm doors open for light refreshments, 6pm panel
Free entry, but please RSVP for catering purposes to: [email protected] or (09) 427 3920
Angus Gillies is the author of the Ruatoria Killings series of non-fiction investigations. He has worked as a journalist and producer at TV3 for 20 years, and has written biographies of sports stars Matthew Ridge, Adam Parore, Justin Marshall, and entertainer John Rowles. Most recently, Angus co-wrote FAR NORTH, an extraordinary true crime tale that was also made into a six-part TV series starring Robyn Malcolm and Temuera Morrison.
Fiona Sussman was born in Johannesburg, and immigrated to New Zealand over thirty years ago. A former family doctor, she's won the Ngaio Marsh Award for Best Novel, the Sunday Star-Times Short Story Award, the 2021 NZ Booklovers Award for Best Adult Fiction, been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Short Story Prize, and contributed to the DARK DEEDS DOWN UNDER anthology. Her latest novel is THE DOCTOR'S WIFE.
Madeleine Eskedahl is the bestselling author of the Matakana Series of mysteries starring Sergeant Bill Granger and Constable Niko Sopoaga. Born and raised in Sweden on the beautiful island of Gotland in the Baltic Sea. Madeleine was a voracious reader from an early age, with a fondness for mystery and convinced she’d become a Private Detective or a Spy when she grew up. Her debut BLOOD ON VINES was voted onto the Whitcoulls Top 100.
Robyn Cotton is a Hibiscus Coast author who grew up in South Taranaki and studied at Massey before embarking on her career in the dairy industry, then as a management consultant and director. After she discovered creative writing she launched A SKYLARK FLIES and MARY & ME, both based on personal experiences. THE JIBE is her first crime novel, inspired by her love of sailing while exploring the beautiful Hauraki Gulf.
Stephen Ross is a Whangaparaoa writer whose short stories have been published in Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, several Mystery Writers of America anthologies, and nominated for an Edgar Award, a Derringer Award, and a Thriller Award. Stephen was a contributor to the DARK DEEDS DOWN UNDER anthology and Agatha Award-winning non-fiction book HOW TO WRITE A MYSTERY. His first novel, THE BRIDE MUST BE STOPPED! will be published in 2025.
