The Backyards for Biodiversity workshop series is all about helping you create habitat at home. If you’ve ever wanted to make your garden more wildlife-friendly, support local species, or simply feel more connected to nature, these sessions are for you.Led by Hannah from Habitat Connection Co., over six engaging and informative sessions, held fortnightly from 6-7.30pm, you’ll learn how to:
- Create native gardens that attract and support wildlife and pollinators
- Play a role in strengthening urban biodiversity corridors and climate resilience
- Understand why local native plants and animals are so important in our ecosystems
- Take simple, everyday actions that make a real difference in your own backyard
Here’s what you can expect in each session:
Session 1 Tuesday 3rd Feb: Habitat Gardening at Home – You’ll discover practical design ideas to create food, shelter, and nesting spaces for local wildlife.
Session 2 Tuesday 17th Feb: Native Gardens for Small Spaces – Even your balcony, courtyard, or pots can become powerful pockets of biodiversity - we’ll show you how.
Session 3 Tuesday 3rd March: Native Pollinators in Your Backyard – You’ll explore the essential role of native pollinators and learn how to attract them with our local native plants.
Session 4 Tuesday 17th March: Native Bees in Your Backyard – Meet our local native bees and find out how to support them with bee hotels and the right plants.
Session 5 Tuesday 31st March: Native Butterflies in Your Backyard – Learn the life cycles of local butterflies and discover which host plants they rely on to thrive.
Session 6 Tuesday 14th April: Native Birds in Your Backyard and celebration – You’ll learn how to bring more birdlife into your garden with food, water, shelter, and safe nesting spots.
To celebrate completing the workshop series, you’ll receive a pack of local native plants - perfect for kickstarting your very own biodiversity-friendly garden.
Can’t make it to every session? That’s okay! You’re welcome to come along to a single session for free.
This workshop series is a collaboration between Alexandrina Council and Second Nature Conservancy as part of the Alexandrina Greening and Wildlife Project, funded by Alexandrina Council and Green Adelaide.
