Janet Webster grew up in a mansion in Shediac, the daughter of pioneering physician J. C. Webster. She led a glittering life, travelling the world including driving across America and Europe, marrying a famous painter and settling in France.Then the Second World War happened.
In this talk, Andrew MacLean, author of the Backyard History books and newspaper column and host of the Backyard History Podcast, will follow Janet Webster’s last letters she sent home depicting live in Occupied France, and her increasing rage with the Nazi invaders.
One day, as she was working in her garden, several car-loads of Nazis appeared and arrested her, sending her to a concentration camp.
While her family never did get an explanation of why she was arrested, in this talk MacLean will build the case that Janet Webster had secretly been a key part of the French Resistance…
