Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor), owner of a struggling furniture store, finds that his basement storage area contains a doorway to an extradimensional nightmare space — a mostly featureless, uncanny landscape of bland yellow walls and drop ceilings, like if hell was constructed from the hallway outside your orthodontist’s office. As his obsession with the space grows, he attempts to map the bizarre rooms and strange collections that he finds. That same obsession leads his therapist, Mary (Renate Reinsve), to follow him in. Mary soon finds that the space has been waiting for her, too.
Based on … well, based originally on a couple of lines of text posted anonymously to the internet’s worst and most notorious message board, Backrooms is the first feature from 20-year-old director Kane Parsons, who started fleshing the idea out in a popular YouTube video series. Now it’s one of the most successful original horror films in a generation. Drawing on influences like House of Leaves, the terror of blank liminal spaces like abandoned malls and the queasy, despairing loneliness of decaying urbanity, Backrooms recreates the Labyrinth for the TikTok era, complete with its own awful Minotaur.
