Bachata w/Louis Casiano and Elvis Lora - DANCE FOR THE DIASPORA BOSTON
About this Event
Join us for an immersive bachata experience that explores the journey of one of the Dominican Republic’s most influential cultural expressions. This open-level workshop invites dancers of all backgrounds and experience levels to discover the rich history, evolution, and global impact of bachata while developing practical dance skills that can be used both socially and artistically.
Together, we’ll trace bachata’s origins from the neighborhoods and countryside of the Dominican Republic, examining how the music and dance emerged from the experiences of working-class communities and evolved through migration, cultural exchange, and the Dominican diaspora. Participants will gain insight into how bachata transformed from a marginalized art form into a worldwide movement that continues to shape Latin dance and music culture today.
The movement portion of the workshop will focus on accessible, social dance concepts that help dancers build confidence, musicality, connection, body movement, and creativity. Through partner work, footwork, and modern bachata vocabulary, dancers will learn techniques and combinations designed to elevate their dancing regardless of whether they are beginners or experienced dancers.
This workshop is more than a dance class—it’s a celebration of culture, resilience, identity, and community. Come ready to learn, move, connect, and experience bachata through both its historical roots and its contemporary expression.
