Aysun Bademsoy's long-term observation of Turkish female soccer players in Berlin. Film Screening and Q&A
About this Event

In her documentaries Girls On The Pitch (Mädchen am Ball, 1995) and After the Game (Nach dem Spiel, 1997) Aysun Bademsoy followed five young Turkish girls from Berlin-Kreuzberg, who belonged
to the successful Turkish football team “BSC Agrispor”.

In the Game picks up thirteen years later. While the friends were filled with a passion for soccer in the 1990s, their lives have changed dramatically since then: Safiye, Arzu, Türkan, Nalan, and Nazan have experienced broken marriages, interrupted education, and Pr*son sentences. What structures have caused such a dramatic change in the lives of these once hopeful women?

Aysun Bademsoy was born in Mersin in 1960 and moved to West Berlin at the age of nine, where she still lives today. She first encountered film as an actress, but at the same time began studying theater studies and journalism at the Free University. She worked with Harun Farocki and Christian Petzold as an assistant director and production manager.

In her first documentary film, she observed young people whose migrant perspective was intended to shed light on social conditions in the Federal Republic of Germany. Different realities of life in Berlin appear repeatedly in her documentary films, but so does the counter-perspective of people in Turkey who have left Germany. Her films have been shown at numerous international festivals. Since 2024, the Deutsche Kinemathek has been responsible for the preservation and digital restoration of her work.

Co-presented with the 25th Boston Turkish Film and Music Festival
