Sylvester Pierce, a prosperous businessman, made his fortune as the owner of the S.K. Pierce and Sons Furniture Company, leading Gardner, Massachusetts to earn its nickname, "Chair City."
In the late 1880s, Pierce decided to build a mansion that reflected his status in society. The resulting 7,000 sq. ft. marvel featured 10 bedrooms and was constructed with meticulous detail by a crew of 100 men over a year and a half. The hand-carved moldings and intricate cornices throughout the home showcase the incredible craftsmanship dedicated to this masterpiece. The mansion has hosted many illustrious guests, including former President Calvin Coolidge, Bette Davis, P.T. Barnum, and Norman Rockwell, and served as a gathering place for the Freemason Society.
While Sylvester, his wife Susan, and their son had grand dreams for this unique mansion, tragedy struck when Susan mysteriously succumbed to a bacterial illness shortly after they moved in. After a year of mourning, Sylvester married Ellen, 30 years his junior, with whom he had two more children. Sylvester passed away in 1888, leaving behind his new wife and their three sons. After Ellen’s passing years later, the three sons squabbled over ownership of the mansion and the family business. The Great Depression severely impacted their fortune, ultimately leading the youngest son, Edward, to take control of the mansion.
As time went on, the mansion fell into disrepair as the family wealth dwindled. Edward transformed it into a boarding house, where debauchery such as drinking, gambling, and even prostitution became commonplace, along with unsettling tales of murder. A notorious incident involves a prostitute who was strangled in the infamous red bedroom, while another resident, Finnish immigrant Eino Saari, tragically burned to death in the master bedroom in 1963 under mysterious circumstances. Some believe it was spontaneous combustion due to the minimal damage nearby. Another eerie tale involves a young boy who met his demise in the basement.
Over the years, countless guests have reported a wealth of paranormal activity. The ghosts of SK Pierce, Susan Pierce, Edward Pierce, a nanny named Mattie Cornwell, a man named David (thought to be the red room's murderer), a young boy, a girl possibly related to the Pierce family, Eino Saari, and other unidentified dark entities inhabit this grand mansion.
Visitors have encountered everything from eerie voices, chanting, full-body apparitions, and moving furniture to slamming doors, phantom footsteps, sudden temperature drops, unpleasant odors, shadowy figures, and even a thunderous lion's roar that shakes the building—believed to be the former Mr. Pierce expressing his discontent over the current state of the mansion and its inhabitants. Some guests have felt ghostly hands pushing them, with one woman believing a spirit tried to shove her down the stairs, while another was forcefully pulled toward a third-floor window. Paranormal investigators have noted that the entities here are among the most advanced they've encountered, able to harness electrical energy to move large objects and assert their will on their environment.
