Avy Awareness 101 for Snowshoers, XC Skiers, Hikers, and the Avy Curious
Schedule
Sat, 31 Jan, 2026 at 01:00 pm
UTC-09:00Location
Independence Mine State Historical Park | Palmer, AK
This event is a discussion on the identification of avalanche terrain and snow-related hazards when recreating during the winter. It is ideal for snowshoers, cross-country skiers, winter hikers and folks who are not necessarily interested in adventuring in avalanche terrain, but wish to identify appropriate areas to recreate based on their skill set. You’ll learn how to identify avalanche terrain, weather conditions that make avalanches more likely, basic companion rescue, and how to read and understand an avalanche forecast. This event is not formal avalanche training. We will be winter hiking (or snowshoeing, depending on conditions) with the potential for moderate elevation gain.
