For most of the fourteenth century Avignon, not Rome, was the seat of the papacy, and the fortress the popes threw up to defend it still looms over the Rhône. This self-guided audio tour crosses the walled city from the Palais des Papes and the Petit Palais to the Musée Calvet, the church of Saint-Agricol, the Jardin des Doms and the four surviving arches of the Pont Saint-Bénézet.
